#GovAbiodunCup20: 3SC, Insurance rekindle traditional memories, Rivers United, MFM FC faceoff in the semis



The final group games of the 2020 Dapo Abiodun Cup were concluded on Saturday, November 21st, as four Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and Nigeria National League (NNL) clubs secured their quarter-final tickets.


In Group C, the two matches of the day ended goalless. Shooting Stars and Kwara United failed to break even, both teams finished with five points respectively in their group but Shooting finished top with a better goals' difference. Nilayo FC ended their campaign with a goalless draw against Remo Stars. 


Group A games witnessed Rivers United edging out Warri Wolves 1-0 courtesy of Adebayo Agunbiade's first-half goal to finished top of the group with 9 points. The second game between Gateway United and Bendel Insurance ended with a barren scoreline.


The Tournament Coordinator, Oye Bawala has confirmed the quarter-final fixtures which is scheduled to hold on Sunday, November 22nd. The top two teams from the three groups were joined by the tournament best losers, Remo Stars and MFM FC.


"We want to commend the participating clubs for their sportsmanship behaviour, we have witnessed the best of Nigerian football in Ijebu-ode and we are hopeful the teams will serve us with more excitement. Congratulations to the teams that progress and we wish the other teams success in the new season," said Bawala.


Defending champions Shooting Stars will hope to retain their title as they battle Bendel Insurance in the first quarter-final fixture on Sunday, the fixture is historical as both teams are the two oldest teams in the tournament with seven NPFL titles in between them.


Lobi Stars was paired against Remo Stars, while Kwara United will battle an NNL side, Crown FC.


Rivers United will faceoff with MFM FC in an all-NPFL quarter-final battle. Rivers United head coach Stanley Eguma says the tournament has helped his team preparation ahead of the new season.


Eguma; "We have had good games and we have been able to use the tournament to assess our team before the new season. Winning the three games was good for us but we still need to work hard because we have tough engagements in the NPFL and on the continent."

Shooting Stars vs Bendel Insurance - 7am (Mainbowl).


Rivers United vs MFM FC - 7am (Training Pitch).


Lobi Stars vs Remo Stars - 4pm (Mainbowl).


Kwara United vs Crown FC - 4pm (Training Pitch).
