Imo Assembly pledges Support For Heartland FC
Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt.
Hon. (Chief) Ben
Uwajumogu has
commended the on-going effort by the Chief Fan Ndubuoke led Management Team in reposition ing Heartland FC of Owerri to become a full professional club
side, assuring that his members are ever willing to give a ‘helping hand.’
Chief Uwajumogu made the pledge while receiving
members of the club’s management team who paid him a courtesy visit
in his office at the House of Assembly complex in Owerri on Monday.
The speaker who noted that long time of mismanagement by the past management team was a major factor that hindered the progress of the club therefore,
commended the new management team for charting a new course to
transform Heartland FC
especially, for deeming it wise to pull the club out of
a hotel room and giving it a befitting office
secretariat where the public including the
members of the business world can do genuine
sporting business with the club.
Uwajumogu recalled how as a ardent fan, he had
traveled to many local and international matches with Heartland FC ( then as Spartans FC and Iwuanyanwu Nationale)
, regretting that the past management team wasted time and resources given to it to
make the club great and a
flagship of Imo State.
He said for many years in the past especially, three
years ago, the state government allocated
resourcs to the club but that instead of advancing the course of the team, the then management
team saw the club only as a ‘full basket of bread.’
The speaker reasoned that
since the club was left in private hand for a long
period of time, that must have been responsible
for the culture and
tendency by the out gone management team to run Heartland FC as a
private entity instead of as
a state owned institution which must be managed
with all seriousness and
sense of responsibility.
He said time has come to re-introduce the club as a state owned team so that
Heartland FC can again enjoy the support and fellowship they once enjoyed from millions of Imo citizens and in fact, many other people in Nigeria.
Chief Uwajumogu
therefore, promised that the Imo State House of
Assembly under him, will set up an ad hoc committee which will work with the current
managementteam to identify and find solutions
to the challenges facing the club.
The speaker said time was gone when the government would be expected to shoulder the burdens of the club alone and that every effort
should be made to
support the decision to make the club financially
independent in the next couple of years.
