United boss sick of people criticising his team
ALEX FERGUSON has
blasted out a Champions
League battle-cry by
declaring there is not a
team in the world to
match his side's
determination.
The Manchester United boss
is sick of people criticising
his team despite the fact
they are top of the League,
in the quarter-finals of the
FA Cup and last 16 in Europe.
They could emulate the
treble heroes of 1999.
Ferguson said: "These
players refuse to be
defeated. We must never
give up.
"Yes, I lean on the veterans
like Giggs and Scholes, but
equally, those who have
been here for five or six
years carry those values -
Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic, Van
der Sar, Carrick, belong to
this group.
"For that reason, that we're
not easy to beat. I don't
know many teams in the
world who have such
determination."
United have lost only once in
the League this season,
away to Wolves, and in the
Carling Cup to West Ham.
They qualified for the
knockout stages of the
Champions League conceding
only one goal.
But for many, this team does
not compare favourably with
his great sides of the past.
Ferguson said: "People won't
stop criticising us. We're not
playing well, apparently.
"Me, I hold on to the fact that
at home we've often been
fantastic.
"At home, we've dropped
only two points - against
West Brom, and in that game,
we were leading 2-0 at half-
time.
"Away, it's another story."
Fergie believes that the
Premier League's greater
strength in depth makes
United's achievements so far
this season even better.
He said: "The Big Four clubs
must deal with the emergence
of Manchester City and
Tottenham.
"Beyond that, every team
are telling themselves
they've got a chance against
the big clubs.
"That wasn't the case five or
six years ago. Now we're
facing a threat everywhere."
Tonight's threat in the
Champions League comes
from French champs Marseille
in this first-leg tie at the
Stade Velodrome.
Manager Didier
Deschamps added
to the question-
marks hanging over this
United team by suggesting
they do not have the magic
of Ferguson's sides of the
past.
Deschamps said: "Maybe this
team has a bit less fantasy
than some we have seen in
the past, but it is not always
the nicest-looking team that
wins titles."
Ferguson believes United
are facing a tough test
against a physical Marseille
side - and and his former
full-back Gabriel Heinze.
Ferguson said: "Marseille are
a team of warriors. They are
never easy to beat on their
own patch.
